Frequently Asked Questions

App Operation

Does the app need to be open to record trips?

The app must remain running in background to record trips. If it is manually closed, no trips are recorded. It is designed to operate passively with minimal interaction.

Do I need to open the app before every drive?

No, not if the app is already running in background. Some Android manufacturers apply background restrictions that can reduce reliability. Opening the app occasionally can help restore stable operation.

Why is there a persistent notification on Android?

Android requires a persistent notification for stable background operation. It shows the current state: Disconnected, Idle, or Collecting Data. This does not imply excessive battery use.

How can I verify that the app is working correctly?

First, check the dashboard: trips should be recorded and the trip charts should show parameter-versus-time traces. It is not enough to see only a trip entry; you should also see signal curves in that trip. If the trip appears but charts are empty, data upload is not completing correctly. On the next drive, open the app in the vehicle and confirm the state is Collecting Data. If it does not reach Collecting Data, unplug the dongle, restart the app, and select the dongle again. As an additional check, many dongles show high-frequency LED blinking while app-dongle communication is active.

Dongles

What type of dongle do I need?

A Bluetooth Low Energy dongle is required. ELM327-compatible chipsets are commonly used. Firmware stability is important for reliable communication.

Will any cheap dongle work?

Some generic adapters respond inconsistently. Unstable firmware can cause data gaps. Using verified models is recommended.

Does the dongle drain my 12V battery?

No. In normal use, a compatible BLE dongle does not create a meaningful 12V battery drain risk. Typical dongle current is in the tens of milliamps. For a 60Ah 12V battery (common in small cars), even a continuous 30mA load corresponds to about 0.72Ah per day (0.03A x 24h), around 1.2% of nominal capacity per day. This is a conservative calculation that does not account for any vehicle use during that time. Many dongles also enter auto-sleep, which reduces real standby impact further. Naubat validation tests have not shown relevant 12V battery issues under normal operation. For long periods without using the vehicle, unplugging the dongle remains the recommended practice, just as with any non-essential electrical consumer.

Is it safe for my vehicle?

Naubat sends read-only diagnostic requests. No coding or configuration changes are performed. No firmware flashing is performed.

Can I use Naubat and another app at the same time with one dongle?

No. This setup is not supported for reliable operation. Even if Naubat connects through the BLE profile and another app connects through Classic Bluetooth, diagnostic extraction quality is usually not acceptable in real use.

Can I use an OBD splitter with two dongles, one for Naubat and one for another app?

It can work in some cases, but it is not guaranteed and not recommended. With two dongles on a splitter, request-response timing on the diagnostic CAN path is not synchronized between tools, which can reduce reliability.

Connectivity

Why did my trip split into two parts?

If there is a long interruption in data upload, one driving session may be shown as two trips. Data collection can still continue locally during temporary connectivity issues. Trip segmentation is applied when data is presented.

I left the car, but the app still shows connected. Is this normal?

Yes. BLE range can be strong, and disconnection may require moving at least around 25 meters away from the vehicle. If the vehicle is at rest, the app should move to Idle even if connection remains. In Idle, no vehicle polling is performed and no data is uploaded; only dongle-state checks continue. If it does not enter Idle, the dongle may still report vehicle 12V supply above active threshold, which can happen for example while charging. Some models also keep high-voltage related systems active longer than others after parking. For example, Kia models often transition faster, while some VW models can remain in this intermediate behavior for several minutes.

Why does my car alarm trigger after I lock the vehicle?

This issue has been identified on some newer MY25 vehicles, including models from brands such as VW and MG. It is related to an additional anti-theft protection behavior that can trigger the alarm when diagnostic communication reaches certain ECUs while the vehicle is locked. It is not caused simply by having a dongle plugged into the OBD port. To reduce this behavior, app-side measures are being applied so that, for affected brands, communication is maintained only when the vehicle is on. Dongles with fast auto-sleep and auto-wake behavior can also mitigate this issue, which is part of the Naubat dongle configuration approach. If it still occurs occasionally, the current practical workaround is to unplug the dongle at the end of the trip and reconnect it manually before the next trip.

Why are final trip data points missing?

If a trip ends without internet coverage, the final segment can be missing from uploaded data. The app can continue operating without internet, but pending data is uploaded only after connectivity returns while the app is again in Collecting Data. If connectivity returns after you have already moved away from the vehicle and the app is Disconnected, that final offline segment can be dropped.

Data and Accuracy

Why are some values not updating?

The vehicle may be idle. The app may be disconnected. Temporary communication instability can delay updates. Values update only when valid responses are received.

Why does my consumption look different from the car display?

Calculation methodologies may differ. Distance source can differ, for example GPS versus odometer. Manufacturers may apply their own rounding and filtering. Naubat applies structured validation rules before presenting values.

Why is a trip marked as unreliable?

This can result from data continuity issues, communication instability, or missing critical signals. Trips marked as unreliable are excluded from aggregated statistics.

Why don’t I see older trips?

Trip history depends on subscription level. Only trips recorded while the app was active are stored.

Can I download my trip data locally?

Yes. Trip data can be exported as CSV from the Trips panel.

Where is my data hosted and how is it protected?

Data is stored in databases hosted on AWS. Access is protected with strict security controls and AWS security layers. This FAQ is updated continuously as new usage scenarios are identified.
